The teenage years are a critical time for students with autism or related disabilities. IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) requires that schools work with students receiving special education services to develop a Transition IEP (Individualized Education Program) no later than 14 years of age. This document serves as a guide for school-based services that assist the family in the process of planning for the move from school to community life. Education and experiences during the teen years should prepare students for their next environments such as employment, vocational training, college, and navigating the community. School districts offer transition services such as employment experiences, community-based instruction, and life skills instruction to assist families in preparing for this transition. Students receiving special education services may be able to attend school until their 22nd birthday. CARD's Daniel Jordan Fiddle Foundation Transition and Adult Programs will support you through the teen years by providing the information and resources needed to plan for the future during this critical time. We offer social and support groups, community events, and trainings and workshops which allow both parents and teens to connect with each other while learning valuable information.
